LPQC Conducts Toy Drive Brunch for WTC Families

New York City Fire and Police officials jointly announced in mid-November the launching of a Christmas toy drive to benefit the families of victims of the World Trade Center attack. New/almost new, unwrapped toys are being collected across the five boroughs and Long Island, to be distributed to the children of all families directly affected by the September 11 disaster (i.e., police, fire, civilian casualties). At press time, the target number of 20,000 total toys being sought had not been reached.

The Libertarian Party of Queens County is supporting the drive in our borough by holding a "Pot Luck Brunch" party at its Saturday, December 8 meeting at Bohemian Hall in Astoria, at 10:00 am. All persons who are interested in donating (toys only, no cash), and sharing in this unique show of support for freedom's defenders, are encouraged to attend that morning to drop off new or gently used, unwrapped toys at the brunch. LPQC Chair Bradford Arter will deliver the toys to a police collection center directly following the party. Contributors are also asked to bring their own food dish to the event, and encouraged to try to tie-in their donated items with a "pro-freedom" theme. Questions and further information about the brunch may be directed to LPQC at (718) 707-1421.

John W. Perry Commemorated

John W. Perry with Mayor

On 11/10/01, a service for the "Celebration of the Exuberant Life of John William Perry" was held at the First Presbyterian Church in Greenwich Village. About 300 police officers attended, as did the Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik. Perry was the celebrated policeman who was filing his retirement papers for the NYPD on September 11, who when hearing of the WTC attack, rushed to the scene. He is among the officers lost in the building's collapse.

As a part time actor, Perry ironically played a mourner at a police funeral, as an extra in an episode of NYPD Blue aired on 11/13. He was a police officer who opposed the war on drugs and was concerned about racial profiling (he was himself the product of an interracial marriage). He belonged to the Libertarian Party and the New York Civil Liberties Union. Perry's life and varied background was described extensively in the New York Times on November 16. Activist and friend Bob Armstrong noted that "seeing 5th Avenue shut off for platoons of Blue aligned in honor of a friend, was awesome. To hear Ms. Bernstein from the Nassau ACLU use the pulpit to present John's principled Libertarian message--against prohibition of not just drugs but also prostitution--to a full church of not just cops, but Commissioner Kerik himself, was inspirational."

In some respects the service was an hour and a half commercial for the Libertarian Party, as many other speakers noted his involvement with the Libertarian Party and his Libertarian views. In attendance were State Vice Chairs Audrey Capozzi and Blay Tarnoff, State Committee members Bonnie Scott and Christopher Garvey, LPNY members Matt Siegel and Jodie Kahn, and State Chair Richard Cooper. Former LPQC Secretary Joe Quinn has uploaded a memorial website for Perry at: http://www.sefco-export.com/johnwperry-memorial-nov102001.htm
